Senior Colton Heffern and junior Caitlin Dreher traveled to the Western National Roundup in Denver last month and came home with two top awards and other recognition.
The two IHS students competed in the quiz bowl, livestock judging and FCS Skill-a-Thon as representatives for Kansas 4-H. The roundup, an annual 4-H and FFA-centered event, included 25 other teams from across the nation, as well as a team from Canada.
To qualify, local 4-H members competed in four different categories at Livestock Sweepstakes Weekend in Manhattan, Kansas, in August. There, they placed second in quiz bowl, second in livestock judging and first in the Skill-a-thon.
In Denver, the 4-H team of Heffern, Dreher and John Emmerson and Hayden Cole of Uniontown placed first in the quiz bowl competition, beating a team from Ohio 21- 9. In the livestock judging contest, the team won the goat division, and received fifth in sheep, eighth in swine and 11th in beef. The foursome also placed sixth in Skill-a-Thon. Overall, the group was seventh in the livestock sweepstakes.
