The baseball season may have gotten off to a slow and rainy start, but the Mustangs ended regular season and league play last week to enter the regional tournament with a first seed.
Going into the Pioneer League tournament tied in the rankings with an also undefeated Central Heights, the Mustangs bested Wellsville and Prairie View to square off with the Vikings for the title. Iola snagged the win 7-3.
Levi Ashmore, one of six seniors on this year’s varsity, has been playing baseball since he was 5 years old. “I love baseball because it is so laid back, while in other sports, you are constantly moving,” he said, adding that he wants baseball to be a significant part of his future.
Junior Derrick Weir, who has been playing baseball for 12 years, said that off the diamond, he really enjoys the camaraderie of being part of a team, spending time with fellow players during and after games. He hopes to one day get a scholarship to play baseball in college.
Classmate Trent Latta has played all his life. The junior loves to be with his friends who are also on the team. He also wants a scholarship from baseball.
