Mustangs look forward to a successful year with a new lineup

Interested in scantily clad men or human brutality in a regulated and acceptable fashion? If you answered yes to either of those questions, then you should check out the Iola wrestling team. After a successful year, the group is returning with a different line-up and plenty of opportunity for the 2013-14 season.

The Mustangs have been preparing for the new season, as senior wrestler Bryce Misenhelter so eloquently put it, “by practicing.” He went on to say that he feels “pretty good” about this new group of freshmen and the new year on a whole.

Cody Connor, also a senior, elaborated: “We have a couple of good new kids this year.”

Senior John Whitworth agreed, noting that “we got some good athletes on the team.”

It’s a good thing that there are some new athletes on the team, because the team lost two state qualifiers from last year: Stephen McDonald and Trey Colborn, who were senior and sophomore, respectively. Joining the freshman and returning to the world of tight-fitting spandex and plastic headgear are John Whitworth and Michael Armstrong, both seniors.

The wrestlers’ head coach is Brad Carson, returning for his second year in the position, and Ron Schomaker is back as assistant coach.

The Mustangs went to Caney on Dec. 7 and made a great entrance into the new year. Very few losses were marked on IHS’ muscle-clad records at the conclusion of the invitational. As one would expect with few losses individually, the team placed well, earning second overall. With such an outstanding opener, fans can only expect this year to be one of consistency.

The team’s first home tournament was on Dec. 19.
