The Iola Fillies volleyball team took a 24-13 record into the state tournament and came out with fourth place.
After a big community pep rally last Thursday, the squad headed to Salina, Kansas, in preparation for competing at the Kansas Class 4A Division II state tournament Friday.
In their first match of pool play at Bicentennial Center, the Fillies made quick work of Girard, 25-13, 25-19, before squaring off with No. 1-seeded Clay Center, which bested the team 25-13, 25-14.
The closest match-up came against Nickerson, who edged out the Fillies by just the two-point margin in the first game. Despite a comeback in the second game, when IHS bested the Panthers 27-25, the Fillies suffered a loss in the final game 23-25. The day ended with three of the teams in the Fillies’ pool at 1-2, but IHS edged out both Girard and Nickerson to earn a spot in bracket play Saturday.
In semifinals, the Fillies fell to Baldwin 11-25 and 20-25, before squaring off against Hoyt-Royal Valley. The Fillies ended up fourth in the state after two tight contests against the Panthers 22-25, 22-25.
The Fillies, who went into state play with a 24-13 record, captured the substate title Oct. 25 after ousting Parsons and Anderson County. The squad defeated the Vikings 25-12, 25-11 and the Bulldogs 25-21, 25-10 to take the championship and earn a place in the state brackets.
