4A wrestling regionals were held at Columbus on Feb. 19. 15 other schools participated in the event.

Junior Colton Toney placed 4th and scored 11 team points. Senior Andrew Garber placed 2nd and scored 19 team points. During the quarterfinal, Garber won by major decision over Dalton Lamb (Chanute). Garber won by a fall in the semifinal round against D.J. Kessler (Independence). Garber lost the 1st place match against Dunkan Watrous (Paola). Junior Tavon Blazek placed second and ended up scoring the most team points. Blazek scored a total of 20 team points at regionals. Blazek won the quarterfinal round by fall over Ryan Tracy (Coffeyville). Blazek won by decision over Tyson Breshears (Burlington) in the semifinal round. Blazek lost to Jesse Henry (Prairie View) by fall in the 1st place match.

“I personally don’t think I did that well,” said Tavon Blazek. “I think if I would have been more focused, I would have definitely done better, for sure. But, I think as a team, as a whole, we did pretty good,” added Blazek.

“We’ve made great improvement since last year,” said coach Jason Bates. “From just qualifying one wrestler to qualifying three with each one of those wrestlers coming home with a win. Not many people get to experience getting their hand raised at state and it’s a great feeling.”

Toney, Garber, and Blazek all competed at the state wrestling meet on Feb. 26 and 27 in Salina. All three finished state with a record of 1-2.
