Varsity Track Squad Makes Noise

Hang on for a minute...we're trying to find some more stories you might like.

The IHS Track and Field season kicked off earlier this month with a series of practices before hosting an intra-squad showcase to give the coaches an idea of the strongest competitors. Last week, the group was able to compete for the first time this year due to chilly  weather conditions.

The meet took place in Labette County and the varsity girls had a strong showing, getting second place overall. Elysia Kunkler was a standout performer for the Fillies, snatching three first place finishes in high hurdles, one-hundred meter dash, and long jump. Kassy Shelby was also able to get a first place medal in the two-hundred meter dash.

The boys varsity squad did not have the same success, placing eighth overall. Freshman runner Jack Adams snatched a third place finish in the 3200M race, having the best day out of all the Mustang runners.

The following meet took place at Paola where neither squads were able to crack the top five, with the girls finishing sixth and  boys finishing 11th. Despite the less-than-stellar team finish, Elysia Kunkler was able to break a school long jump record that stood strong since 1977. She jumped 16 foot 11 ½ inches, which broke Jolene Riley’s previous record of 16 foot 11 inches flat.

The next varsity meet will take place in Anderson County on April 12th.
